Side Event: Inclusive Supply Chains and Continuous Improvement

An Indian farmer with shrimp feed
Scope /

Following the success and popularity of the previous two inclusive supply chain events, this session will build on key themes and highlight examples of continual improvement in the small-scale shrimp sector. The morning session will focus on other small-scale commodities and provide working examples of value chain upgrading. This will include a series of presentations and an interactive panel session for audience participation. After lunch, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from four practical examples in the small-scale shrimp industry and actively participate in discussions around new approaches to challenges and innovative ideas to assist with continued development. It is hoped that these new approaches and ideas will lead to further advancements in the small-scale producer space for all attendees. The inclusive supply chain and continuous improvement session is sponsored by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Lunch is included, and since seats and spaces are limited, registration is required. (Photo courtesy of Aquaconnect.)

Working Groups

Break-Out 1:

The interactive session will explore how the shrimp aquaculture industry can evolve to improve production, livelihoods, and the environment. SFP and ASC will share their thinking on why this is needed and how it can be achieved, using a case study in Andhra Pradesh, where these ideas will be tested. Most of the session will be run as a discussion group to brainstorm ideas on opportunities and challenges for the audience, their companies, and others to engage in such an industry transformation.

Break-Out 2:

In response to the challenge of tropical deforestation driven by agricultural expansion, certification schemes like RSPO have aimed to protect High Conservation Value (HCV) areas within concessions. However, individual concession-level certification has had a limited impact on broader ecological issues. To respond to this, Kaleka and RSPO have piloted an RSPO jurisdictional certification in Indonesia. In this session, we will explore opportunities and design challenges to extend jurisdictional assurance models into the aquaculture certification space, looking at shrimp production in Seruyan, Kalimantan.

Break-Out 3: Addressing Issues in Small-Scale Shrimp Supply Chains, Benefitting Communities and Access to Markets—Indonesia and Bangladesh

This interactive session will give participants an understanding of the challenges that shrimp producers are experiencing in Indonesia and Bangladesh and how they are being addressed through partnerships with Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Monterey Bay Aquarium takes an area-based approach to improvement, working with partners to provide inclusive methods to improve many aspects of sustainability.  The session will also give working examples of how shrimp from other Monterey Bay Aquarium partner projects have moved to full market recognition and how local communities are directly benefitting through the Monterey Bay Aquarium Community Development Fund. The session will invite participants to contribute ideas on their own experiences and how these approaches may help further their work and give small scale producers greater market access in recognition of their improvement work.
