Lorenzo is General Manager of Hendrix Genetics Ecuador. He has 38 years of experience managing aquaculture organizations across production, R&D, regulation, policy, and across geographies and farmed species of fish and shrimp. He has worked for industry, governments, and NGO’s and is a past president (2009), Fellow (2012), and Honorary Life Member (2022) of the World Aquaculture Society. Lorenzo holds a master’s degree in Aquaculture from Auburn University (1982) and a B.Sc. from the Monterrey Institute of Technology (1980). His previous positions include CEO for Sea Products Technology, a company specializing in selective breeding and intensive farming of shrimp, independent consulting, COO of Yorktown Technologies (makers of transgenic fish for the ornamental trade), CEO of Baja Aquaculture Inc., Deputy Director of NOAA’s Office of Aquaculture in Washington, DC; General Manager of Shrimp Improvement Systems (SIS); Director of SyAqua, Mexico, and General Manager of SeaFarms International. Lorenzo was also Deputy Regional Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture Research for the Mexican National Institute of Fisheries. Throughout his career he has written extensively about his experiences with shrimp hatchery operations, selective breeding programs, offshore mariculture, and about aquaculture and environmental sustainability. He has published numerous works in peer-reviewed journals and trade magazines, including two chapters in 2010’s The Shrimp Book, book summarizing advances in shrimp farming, and a recent chapter in 2022’s The Shrimp Book II, on the sustainability of shrimp farming.
